Now that I'm feeling more at peace with completing my uncle's collection of comics I found a shop out in a little town an hour north of where I live. It's part of small collections of comic shops, but this is the one that has a horde of $1 comics.
What I'm looking for is somewhere in there! I can smell it!

I manged to bag Action Comics 455, 456, and 483 at a prices I was happy with ($1.50, $2, and $2.50 respectively). They had a bunch more early '80s comics but as of now I'm not interested with the $4-5 range. This collection is less about making the perfect, near-mint run of Action Comics and more about actually reading and enjoying them. So while I'd like a nice cover, I have no problem with issues that collectors would consider to have major blemishes (e.g. "That corner has a crease! What a piece of junk!")
On top of that I snagged a couple $1 comics that add to a couple collections I'm slightly considering, but not commited to and I found three issues that I have been looking for in order to complete a mini-series.

So, yeah, that means I originally only had one issue, but it was the #1. Plus it was an issue my uncle had given to me as a gift so it held a special place in my heart. I remember reading it a couple months ago and loving the idea. The Time Trapper is attempting to destroy the Legion of Super-Heroes. This time he decides to attack the three founding members who have since retired. Specifically he attacks Garth Ranzz (a.k.a. Lightning Lad. Yeah I know. It's a cheesy name, but what do you expect from a character created in 1958 to test Superboy). Time Trapper considers him the weak link because of his doubt. "Garth Ranzz is an actor playing a role...a child pretending to be an adult...playing the hero's game, living the life of a leader, but when faced with the reality of his responsibilities...Garth Ranzz always retreated into madness. Now the child plays the father." And thus Time Trapper kidnaps Garth's newborn son a bait.
As a husband, less than a year into starting his family, I can completely empathize with Garth. I can barely take care of myself, much less a wife or even the possibility of kids in the future. How am I supposed to do it?
The first step for me is just to remember, it's not all on me. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8"
This mini-series in total, started strong and had fun with the idea of retired superheroes, but I think it actually could have used one more issue to fully flesh out where it needed to go. I'll definitely read it again later to give it a second chance. And if nothing else, it gave the world this amazing splash page...
